South of the Greek capital Athens has been a large bush and forest area in Flames since Thursday (see video above)). Dozens of inhabitants of the Palaia Fokaia coastal resort and four other villages were brought to safety, countless holiday homes became a robbery of the flames.
The fire could be brought under control on Friday, but dozens of firefighters remained willing to prevent the fire near Palaia Fokaia and the municipality of Thymari, as spokesperson for the fire brigade for the AFP press agency said.
The cause of the fire has so far been unknown, strong wind had fought against the flames. Due to the high temperatures and the strong wind, the Greek civil protection continued to warn of a “very high” risk of forest fire in the Athens region and on the islands of the North Gear Sea.
In large parts of Greece there are currently temperatures of around 40 degrees. There is an increased risk of forest fire throughout the country.
4000 hectares of land destroyed on Chios
Chios Forest Fires has also been raging on the Aegean island since Sunday. So far, according to the “Copernicus” Stroobservation program, more than 4,000 hectares of land have been destroyed by the flames.
According to the Fire Brigade, the situation at Chios was under control on Friday, but about 200 troops were still in stand -By. Greece experiences countless forest fires every summer, which are felt by strong wind, dryness and high temperatures.
