A new language conflict broke out in South Tyrol. If it goes to the Italian Alpine Association, the German names of mountain huts must be replaced. However, resistance is already formed against this project.
The Italian Alpine Association of South Tyrol (AVS) demands that the German city names of the mountain huts disappear because they were not related to the region, such as the South Tyrolean local newspaper “Dolomites” and the Italian state broadcaster Rai reported.
Raise story
It is about huts such as Regenburger Hütte, Zwickauer Hütte, Kasseler Hütte or Marburger Hütte, whose German names are deeply anchored in the history of Alpinism. They were built by German and Austrian Alpine Associations in the 19th century, when South Tyrol was still part of the Habsburg Empire. Even after the First World War, when the area came to Italy, the names remained, albeit in part with Italian names.
The proposal of the Alpine Club: in the future the huts must bear names of Italian regions or local geographical characteristics.
South Tyrolean politician warns of loss of identity
But the proposal in Zuid -Tirol now meets violent criticism. Otto Mahlknecht, vice -chairman of the party “Die Freiheitiche”, who is part of the South Tyrolean State Government, warns of a historical loss of identity. “Everyone who thinks today names such as Chemnitzer Hütte or Marburger Hütte are no longer up -to -date, not only ignores the history of Alpinism, but also controls a doubtful identity policy on the back of the historical merit,” Mahlknecht told Rai.
About 70 percent of the population speaks German or Ladin in the region. At the same time, Germany is the largest tourist group in South Tyrol with more than 40 percent.
