Bloody Tradition – Pamplona -Bierlauf: Five injuries in one day

Date:

Five people were injured in the Sixth Bull’s Run of this year’s Sanfermín festival in Pamplona in North Spain. On the more than 800 meter long route to the bullfighting arena there were countless waterfalls in the narrow streets with many curves.

Four out of five injuries had to be taken to the hospital, another was taken care of on the spot.

Dangerous moments in the arena
Many of the mainly male runners try to run for or next to the six bulls and to attack them on the horns or on the back. Even after the enema in the Arena there were dangerous moments – some runners were just able to manage behind the barriers for the horns of a bull.

A commentator from the Spanish TV station RTVE, who broadcasts the runs live, criticized the behavior of some participants who violate conduct rules. For example, because they held the horns of the bulls for too long during the run or do not bring themselves to safety quickly enough in the arena.

Last Bull Run on Monday
The “Sanfermines” are dedicated to the city of Saint San Fermín and are always celebrated in the first half of July in the 200,000 residents city of the Navarra region since the end of the 16th century. In eight days in a row, six bulls and various tame weapons are chased through the narrow streets of the old town for the bullfights in the evening to the Arena.

There the bulls die in the evening by the hand of a Torero. As always, the last run takes place on July 14. Animal rights activists have been protesting against the spectacle for years. “Bull Run causes animals suffering,” emphasizes the PETA organization in Germany.

Life -threatening spectacle
The long, pointed horns of the bulls can also cause fatal injuries. Since 1924 there have been 16 fatalities, the last in 2009. In the narrow streets, on Saturday morning, many participants also walked so that they often cannot avoid a runner for them. Then many participants fall together. The bulls with a weight of up to 600 kilograms try to jump reflexively over people on the floor in a canter.
