The extreme drought, which has already led to catastrophic forest fires in southern Europe, is now increasingly causing problems in this country. For example, a forest fire broke out on Saturday in the municipality of Dünserberg in Vorarlberg, which could only be extinguished at an early stage by attentive hikers and the quick intervention of 80 firefighters – and thus a worse situation could be prevented.
Even if the extreme heat of 35 degrees and more hasn’t reached the dreaded state yet, the risk of wildfires in Vorarlberg is increasing. Forest soils in particular are becoming drier. Sometimes shards of glass lying on the ground are sufficient, which can lead to a burning glass effect due to the sun’s rays and cause a fire.
This magnifying glass effect could also have been the trigger for the start of the forest fire that attentive hikers discovered on Saturday afternoon around 5 p.m. in the “Shop parking lot” in the municipality of Dünserberg. They immediately issued an emergency call, after which the fire brigades of the municipalities of Dünserberg, Düns, Übersaxen, Schnifis and Röns left with ten vehicles and 80 emergency services.
The rapid intervention of the Florianis allowed some burning pine trees and the dry forest floor, which had also caught fire, to be quickly extinguished, preventing the flames from spreading. According to the police, a total of about 70 to 100 square meters of forest has been destroyed. Fortunately no one was injured.
