The attacker was killed by a young man who was armed
Three people were killed and two others injured, including a 12-year-old girl, by a man who indiscriminately opened fire at a mall in Indiana, United States. The author of the shots was killed by a 22-year-old who was at the scene and was armed.
The shooting took place at a shopping center in the town of Greenwood, 10 miles south of Indianapolis, around 2:00 a.m. Spanish time. “The deaths of four people have been confirmed,” said Greenwood police chief Jim Ison, clarifying that the author of the massacre is on the balance sheet. The attacker, who has not been identified, entered the restaurant area of the shopping center around 6 p.m. (two o’clock in the morning in Spain) and opened fire with a rifle, according to local police. Among the injured was a 12-year-old girl.
Ison praised the intervention of the young man who ended the attack. “The real hero of the day is the citizen who legally had a firearm in that restaurant area and was able to quickly apprehend the man,” the officer said. “This has shaken us to the core. It’s not something we’ve seen before in Greenwood, it’s absolutely awful,” he says.
This is the latest in a wave of armed violence to hit the United States, a country that records some 40,000 deaths from firearms each year. The attack came a few weeks after a gunman opened fire at a Fourth of July parade in an affluent Chicago suburb, killing seven and injuring at least three dozen. May also saw two major massacres in which ten African Americans were shot and killed at a convenience store in Buffalo, New York; and 19 children and two teachers were killed at a Texas elementary school.
The recent increase in gun violence has reignited the fierce debate over gun control in the country. A House committee will vote this week on a bill to ban assault rifles for the first time in nearly 20 years.
