Italian Prime Minister mario draghi presents this Thursday dismissalafter losing the parliamentary majority that supported him.
Draghi was welcomed with applause by the Chamber of Deputies, where he expressed gratitude and stated that ‘even bankers have hearts’.
After the resignation, the head of state Sergio Mattarella is expected to meet early electionsthough it could also instruct him to seek another majority to exhaust the legislature or assign that mandate to another technical or institutional figure.
Draghi’s decision comes after three partners in his governing coalition, Silvio Berlusconi’s conservative Forza Italia (FI), Matteo Salvini’s far-right League and Giuseppe Conte’s populist 5 Star Movement (M5S), withdrew their support in a vote of no confidence in the Senate this Wednesday.
