Italian authorities rescue nearly 700 migrants in a floating fishing boat

Five dead people have also been identified.

The Italian coastguard has launched a major rescue operation in recent hours to rescue 674 migrants floating in a fishing boat off the coast of Calabria, where five people have also been identified.

The operation, which took place 124 nautical miles off the coast on Saturday, involved three coastguard patrols, a merchant vessel and a unit of the Guardia di Finanza, the security agency of the Ministry of Economy, in rescue tasks.

The Italian Coast Guard had to pull people out of the water due to the situation of the fishing boat, initially sighted by an Italian Navy P72A maritime patrol, which made the first sighting, and a Frontex aircraft following the rescue. Some of the rescued migrants were transferred this morning to the ports of Calabria and Sicily.

The Italian coast guards have stressed in their statement that the past few hours have been “particularly demanding” for the coast guard patrol boats, which had previously, along with the “Diciotti” boat, rescued other migrants who were in boats in precarious navigation conditions, without determining the exact number.

In fact, the intervention of a helicopter departing from Catania Coast Guard airbase was necessary to carry out the medical evacuation of a woman.
