In the Oslo Bay of Frognerkilen, a “fat” lady is currently making a name for herself: “Freya”, the walrus, weighs no less than 700 kilos and likes to sit at ease. Unfortunately, she likes to choose the boats in the harbor for her naps – and they are often not designed for her weight…
With her somewhat clumsy attempts at climbing, the walrus lady has now pushed one or the other boat under water and sunk it. What delights onlookers and tourists, of course, is less fun for boat owners.
Sleeping platform found no favor
The attempt to make a purpose-built place for “Freya” palatable as a place to sleep failed. She prefers to take the boats in the harbor. Now it is hoped that the walrus lady continues her journey alone. Before their time in Norway, the walruses had been sighted in Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Scotland.
Walruses actually inhabit the Arctic seas of the Northern Hemisphere, but dwindling food sources are driving them south again and again. They belong to the seal family, the females weigh between 600 and 800 kilograms, the males weigh up to 1200 kilograms. The most striking feature of the animals is their long tusks, which occur in both sexes but are much more pronounced in the males.
