In India, two men have been arrested for stealing a skull from a pyre. A practitioner of so-called black magic motivated the suspects to steal by telling them a ritual involving the skull would make them rich, a police spokesman said Thursday.
In India, Hindu funerals usually involve burning corpses on pyres in the presence of relatives. In the case of the stolen skull, relatives had already left, but another person witnessed the theft, the police spokesman said. The two suspects have been released on bail. Another man is still on the run.
The men were now being investigated for insulting religious feelings, among other things.
Ancient tradition in India
In India, black magic has an age-old tradition, sometimes involving human sacrifice – in hopes of appeasing the gods, gaining good fortune or prosperity, or averting evil. Today, however, there are only isolated reports of such cases.
