German Economy and Climate Protection Minister Robert Habeck wants to accelerate the expansion of renewable energy. “We need to switch our energy system as soon as possible away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy sources,” the Green politician said on Friday.
From Saturday, fees for all new photovoltaic systems in Germany will be increased in view of new regulations for the expansion of renewable energy sources. “This sends a clear signal to the market and gives solar energy a decisive boost,” Habeck told the newspapers of media group Funken. Anyone who starts using a new photovoltaic installation from Saturday will receive a maximum of 13.4 cents per kilowatt hour.
Are in the “highest public interest”
From now on, according to the Renewable Energy Act in Germany, the principle applies that renewable energy sources are in the so-called “highest public interest” and serve public safety. “This is crucial to increase the pace,” said the Minister of Economic Affairs. Given the current situation, renewable energy has become a matter of “national and European security”.
The EEG law that Habeck presented at the beginning of April was published in the Government Gazette on Thursday. Since then, the first changes can be implemented in the short term. At the beginning of this month, the German government had already dropped the controversial EEG-surcharge for electricity customers. In addition, further measures are planned from 2023 to promote the expansion of solar and wind energy.
