Only centimeters are missing – Lake Constance is heading for historical low

Date:

Although there have been repeated heavy thunderstorms and rainfall in the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley in recent days, Lake Constance is approaching a historic low. On Sunday morning, Bregenz harbor was just 19 centimeters below its lowest point on July 31 since 1864.

Due to the low water level in Lake Constance, the first boats have to be brought ashore from the ports, especially on the western shore. “We have been constantly out of the water for 14 days,” says the harbor master of the German municipality of Moos (Konstanz district), Martin Graf. “Actually, we don’t have boats that are where they should be.” About a third of the boats on the approximately 400 berths have been moved or taken out of the water.

“There are such low water levels from time to time, but usually not at this time of year,” Graf said. Also on the island of Reichenau, the first boat owners stranded before the summer holidays in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria had started. About 50 of the more than 260 boats in the island’s harbor were pulled from the water because they would otherwise run aground, harbor master Franz Egenhofer said. Many owners are angry.

Those who have to find another berth for the boat because of the low water have bad maps at the moment. “We currently have many boat owners from other ports who have to get out because the draft is no longer sufficient,” said a spokeswoman for the largest port. Lake Constance, the ultramarine marina in Kressbronn. The situation there is not that problematic because the harbor basin, as a former gravel pit, is quite deep. “Unfortunately, we are full ourselves and have to decline these requests.”

According to the Baden-Württemberg State Environment Agency, the water level in Konstanz was less than 3.30 meters at the end of the week. This is only about four inches away from the seasonal low tide record. The authority assumes that the previous low for this season of 3.17 meters from the years 1949 and 1876 “will be reached or even lower in the summer or fall” if little rain continues to fall.

But the level is also approaching a low point in Bregenz: Sunday morning (7.15 am) it was 3.29 meters in the port. It was 1.30 meters below the level of the previous year and 0.89 meters below the July 31 long-term average. In Bregenz, only 19 centimeters is missing from the lowest value since the beginning of the series of measurements in 1864
