Prosecutor of Capitol Attack Assures There Will Be No “Favoritism” in Investigation

Date:

Justice Department will assess whether there is any felony in Trump’s pressure to make believe his electoral defeat a fraud

Under pressure from public opinion and overwhelming evidence gathered by the Congressional Committee, Attorney General Merrick Garland finally made it official last week that the Justice Department will investigate the actions of former President Donald Trump on Jan. 6, 2021, when a gang of hotheads the Capitol. Garland has now promised that “justice without fear or favour” will be done for everyone involved in the uprising and does not rule out criminal charges against Trump.

The Justice Department’s initiative is progressing in two simultaneous ways, according to The Washington Post newspaper. The first focuses on the sedition and conspiracy plot hatched to impede Trump’s transfer of power to his successor, Joe Bien, charges already filed against several individuals who participated in the Capitol Hill attack, including two leaders of far-right groups, Stewart Rhodes and Henry ‘Enrique’ Tarrio, the leaders of The Oath Keepers and Proud Boys respectively. While they did not raid the legislative headquarters, they were involved in planning the coup.

The second track explores fraud allegations related to a false voter scheme and the pressure Trump and his allies put on the Justice Department and other government agencies to promote the idea of vote fraud.

Federal prosecutors are gearing up for an intense court battle, which will also see them seek the testimony of former Trump-era White House officials, who are sure to invoke presidential executive privilege as a legal shield to prevent they are forced to testify. . The prosecution hopes by issuing a series of injunctions to anticipate this foreseeable resistance to testifying by those loyal to the Republican leader, a move that is taking a much more aggressive stance than that adopted by the department so far.

It would be a clear indication that the investigation is focusing more on the former president’s figure and his conversations and interactions with others involved in the coup. Added to this is the January 6 evidence-sharing agreement between the Justice Department and the Commission, which includes the testimonies of at least 20 witnesses and will save prosecutors a lot of time.

Meanwhile, apparently oblivious to all these legal sieges, the former president is once again at the center of controversy thanks to the LIV golf tournament sponsored by the Saudi state fund at his club in Bedminster, New Jersey. The championship has sparked strong protests by the families of the victims of 9/11, who accuse the Saudi government of having links to the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers, although no investigation has found evidence of that relationship.

Families say the Saudis are using the sport to condone the kingdom’s bleak human rights situation, such as the 2018 murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Hundreds of people have staged protests within four miles of the 500-acre Trump National resort.

The tournament has attracted some of the biggest names in the sport, including Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau. Prizes of up to $25 million in cash have been handed out. And if that wasn’t enough, Trump has used the presidential seal as part of his organization’s logos on multiple objects, including golf carts and towels. Federal law prohibits the use of this seal as it could create the false impression of “sponsorship or endorsement” from the government, not to mention that Trump is no longer president of the United States.

Still, the competition has been a triumph for the Republican leader and marks his return to the business of a sport he’s been cultivating for years. Especially after the unflattering ‘fire’ by the Professional Golf Association of America (PGA), which canceled its championship at the resort just days after the January 6 uprising.

As a testament to the former president’s durability, the tournament marks his recovery as a prominent figure in the golf world, with an additional rematch against the PGA. He even took advantage of the inauguration to ask the barons of this sport to turn their backs on the association and go with him.

Trump, who exposed Saudi Arabia’s role in the 9/11 attacks during his candidacy in 2016, soon brought an idyll of ease to the kingdom after his presidential election. A relationship that has been financially beneficial to the family businesses. In any case, it is not clear how much he will earn for this championship. The first matches were banned from a YouTube broadcast and there is no TV deal. Ticket prices have been reduced from $75 on Friday to the current $3 in the secondary market.
