On Sunday, a family from Obertrum in the Salzburger Flachgau experienced an animal surprise: suddenly a small, silvery ball of fur appeared at their door.
It was a stroke of luck that the family found the ball of yarn. After the family called Pfotenhilfe Lochen’s wildlife hotline, the family took the baby animal to the nearby wildlife sanctuary. There it was immediately recognized that it was a female polecat.
The poor and utterly helpless baby, who was only a few days old, was covered in fly eggs and ticks, and after the time-consuming removal of these, Pfotenhilfe boss Johanna Stadler immediately began feeding them. “The fly eggs develop into maggots and eat the poor baby alive, and the ticks suck up life-threatening amounts of blood,” Stadler said. The lack of nest heat was replaced by the planting aid with a hot water bottle and blankets.
Polecats are native to us and belong to the marten family. They like to nest in the roof beams, where this baby polecat may have fallen after being found right outside the front door. “We therefore asked the caller to keep an eye out for other babies,” Stadler says. “Once the polecat girl has finished rearing in the fall, we can release her into the wild.”
