“Don’t Panic” – India’s first monkey pox death to mourn

Date:

India has reported its first death from monkeypox: A 22-year-old man who tested positive in the United Arab Emirates at the end of July died of the disease in the southern state of Kerala on Saturday.

21 people are in isolation after close contact with the deceased. However, the contacts showed no symptoms and there was no reason to panic, a regional government minister said Monday.

Already several deaths
Spain also reported two deaths related to the monkeypox virus on Saturday. Shortly before that, Brazil had reported what was likely the first fatality from the current virus outbreak outside the African continent.

WHO: High alert
Monkeypox is a viral infection that is usually mild. Symptoms include fever, headache, and rash, which usually start on the face and spread to the rest of the body. Since the beginning of May, the disease has spread worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the highest level of alert for the global health crisis on July 23.
