There is movement in the fight for a majority-worthy compromise for general corona vaccination in Germany. The two groups of deputies in the Bundestag, who each tabled their own draft legislation for mandatory vaccination, agreed on Tuesday on a joint proposal for mandatory vaccination from the age of 60. This increases the chances of the vote, which is scheduled for next Thursday without the usual group guidelines.
As stated in a statement: “a vaccination certificate will be mandatory for all people over 60, i.e. the particularly vulnerable population group”. It should be completed in October.
Bundestag must decide in the fall
This obligation could be suspended by a resolution of the Bundestag in June if vaccination rates could be increased sufficiently. In the autumn, the Bundestag will decide, against the background of the then prevailing knowledge and possible virus variants, “whether the activation of the vaccination obligation for age groups from 18 years should also take effect”.
A compromise for mandatory vaccination from 50 years is also on the table
In concrete terms, it is the group around SPD party chairman Dirk Wiese and the Greens health expert Janosch Dahmen, which initially aimed for mandatory vaccination from the age of 18. On Monday, she already presented a compromise proposal for a service from the age of 50 with the possibility of extending it to all adults. The second group, led by FDP health politician Andrew Ullmann, had proposed mandatory advice and then a possible mandatory vaccination from the age of 50.
The initiative, which originally proposed mandatory vaccinations from the age of 18, has so far been supported by 237 MPs. The group for compulsory vaccination from 50 onwards initially supported about 45 parliamentarians.
