“Great influence” – Zelenskyj wants to end the war with help from China

Date:

Apparently, Ukrainian head of state Volodymyr Zelenskyy is trying to hold direct talks with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. According to a Chinese newspaper report, Zelenskyy hopes that Chinese influence will help end the war in his country.

“It is a very powerful state. China has a strong economy. (…) So it can influence Russia politically and economically. Moreover, China is a permanent member of the UN Security Council,” the South China Morning Post quoted the Ukrainian president as saying. He is looking for an opportunity to speak “directly” with Chinese leader Xi Jingping.

Unlike western countries, China has maintained friendly relations with Russia even after the Russian military offensive in Ukraine. Recently, oil imports from Russia have also increased. However, the Beijing government is also trying to keep the price of loyalty to Moscow as low as possible so as not to face sanctions itself. The United States has been demanding for months that China make a clear statement against and condemn the Russian attack on Ukraine. But this has not happened to date.

Zelenskyy again accused Russia of violating international law in his daily video speech on Wednesday evening. The problem is that the world has long let Russia get away with these violations – be it annexing Crimea or bringing down a Boeing over the Donbass. The war in Ukraine shows how fragile freedom is. It can “be protected only through collective action, and for this to work in the long run, an effective global security architecture is required that ensures that no state can ever again use terror against another state,” Zelenskyj demanded.

“Disgusting”: Selenskyj criticizes Schröder
At the same time, he accused Russia of merely pretending to negotiate. If Russia were really interested in a peaceful solution to the conflict, it would not build any further reserves in southern Ukraine now. In this regard, Selenskyj criticized Gerhard Schröder, who, after his trip to Moscow, had described Russia as willing to negotiate. “It’s just disgusting when former leaders of powerful states with European values work for Russia fighting these values,” Zelenskyy said.
