The human rights organization Amnesty International accuses the Ukrainian army of endangering civilians with its warfare. Ukrainian troops, for example, would set up military bases in populated residential areas. These are, for example, schools and hospitals, according to a report published on Thursday.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces are believed to use weapon systems at these military bases. However, martial law requires the parties to place military objects as far as possible from civilian facilities, the organization warned. However, Amnesty International also stressed that the “Ukrainian violations in no way justify the many indiscriminate attacks by the Russian army on civilian casualties that we have documented in recent months.”
Kiev speaks of ‘propaganda campaign’
While the Russian media debated the report at length, Kiev was outraged. Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podoliak accused Amnesty of participating in a Russian propaganda campaign. According to him, western arms supplies should be stopped in this way. “The only danger for Ukrainians is the Russian army of executioners and rapists who come to Ukraine and commit genocide,” Podoliak wrote on Twitter. Ukraine is said to be evacuating more and more residents from cities close to the front because the lives of the civilian population are a priority.
battles in the east
On Thursday, the Russian army reported advances in the heavily disputed Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine. Several Ukrainian brigades have withdrawn from their positions due to heavy casualties, Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said. This information could not be independently verified. The Ukrainian General Staff again speaks of a stable situation. “The enemy was unsuccessful in all the sections mentioned and withdrew,” it said. Should places like Bakhmut and Soledar fall, it would clear the way for Russian troops to enter the metropolitan area around the major cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
Since the start of the war in late February, cases of the most serious crimes against civilians have repeatedly come to light. The international community largely blames Russia for this. Examples include the discovery of hundreds of bodies in the Kiev suburb of Bucha and a rocket attack on fleeing Ukrainians in the city of Kramatorsk.
