According to United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres, the threat of nuclear confrontation is “back after decades”. He warned against the use of these weapons.
Nuclear nations must commit to not using these weapons for the first time, Guterres said at a news conference in Tokyo on Monday ahead of the Hiroshima peace commemoration ceremony marking the 77th anniversary of the first atomic bombing.
All attacks on a nuclear power plant are also “suicidal,” he said, citing reports of renewed Russian shelling of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhya in Ukraine.
The attack on Zaporizhzhya warned the International Atomic Energy Agency. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi warned on Saturday of the risk of a nuclear disaster that could threaten public health and the environment in Ukraine and beyond.
