The glaciers in the Alpine region are shrinking more and more: since the end of the 19th century, more than 200 have disappeared and – as a result of global warming – rubble and rocks have collapsed. This is apparent from a report by the Italian environmental association Legambiente, which was published on Wednesday.
From August 17 to September 3, the environmental organization will investigate the situation in the Alpine arc together with Italian glaciologists (glacier researchers, note). The condition of the glaciers is observed in five stages from the Valle d’Aosta to Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Particular attention is paid to the Marmolada Glacier, where 11 people died when the glacier broke on July 3.
“Just over a month after the tragedy, we are returning to Mount Marmolada to raise awareness of the climate emergency,” said Giorgio Zampetti, Legambiente boss. “With our glacier caravan, we want to collect data and concrete elements and call on the Italian government to achieve the goal of zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, in line with the Paris Agreement (COP21).”
“We’re going on a three-week trip, returning to many of the glaciers we visited two years ago,” said Vanda Bonardo, Legambiente’s Glacier Campaign Coordinator.
