The leader of the radical Islamist Taliban, Sheikh Rahimullah Haqqani, has been killed in a suicide bombing in the Afghan capital, Kabul. The attack took place in a religious seminary. A man with an amputated leg hid explosives in his prosthesis and then detonated them.
It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack, Reuters said. The Taliban said they are investigating the murder.
Abdul Rahman, the chief of intelligence in the Kabul district, confirmed the cleric’s death.
A year ago, after the hasty withdrawal of international troops, the Taliban again took control of Afghanistan. Since then, there have been repeated attacks with numerous casualties. The radical Islamic IS militia has repeatedly acknowledged this. Experts have long feared that rivalry between the Taliban and other extremist groups could lead to further violence.
