Victim of 18 meter deep fissure (24) found glacier falling to laugh

Date:

A young Czech woman (24) fell into a 50-foot-deep fissure on the Hallstätter Glacier in Upper Austria. But the woman didn’t realize the danger she was in and thought it was all quite funny.

Wilfried Schrempf, the landlord of the Seethalerhütte on the Dachstein, was securing the glacier trail when a young Czech stormed up. “My girlfriend fell into a hole,” the 25-year-old explained excitedly in very flawed English. Yet it was immediately clear to Schrempf that the woman must have fallen into a crevice. “Outside the secure path, it’s extremely dangerous at the moment,” he says.

The host grabbed his quad bike and drove to the scene of the accident. “But the hole was so deep that I couldn’t even see the Czech,” says the 52-year-old. As it turned out, the vacationer had fallen through a snow bridge and slipped at the bottom of the first crack through another crack about 40 centimeters wide.

only abrasions
Schrempf started the rescue operation together with a mountain guide who happened to be passing by. “We assumed that the woman was in mortal danger, so I alerted the ambulance helicopter,” says Schrempf. Both were then greatly relieved when the woman verbally identified herself and screamed that it would be okay. “We took down a rope and a climbing harness, which she put on.” In just 20 minutes, the two managed to pull the fallen woman to the surface.

No equipment
The 24-year-old actually only had minor scrapes, as the helicopter’s emergency doctor found out to his surprise. Above all, the rescuers were amazed at the woman’s behaviour. “She smiled during the rescue and apparently wasn’t exaggerating about the danger she was in.” The Czech couple was also extremely ill-equipped, carrying no rope or climbing equipment. Schrempf: “For example, the woman was only dressed in slippers, leggings and a thin bodysuit. We spoke to them more or less in their conscience.”
