An international coalition is needed to prosecute “the bloody acts in Ukraine,” Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said on Saturday. The Nuremberg war crimes trials against National Socialists after World War II should serve as a model.
The defense minister has already sent a request to Ukraine’s contact group through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kiev. His country, for example, needs experts in military law and special forces to solve war crimes and punish the Russian attackers. The Contact Group includes countries such as the US, Germany and the UK.
“I have no doubt that after Ukraine’s victory in this war, we will somehow track down everyone involved in the barbaric killings and torture,” Reznikov said. According to him, not only the perpetrators themselves should be punished, but also those who justify such crimes. The minister cited the Nuremberg trials for war crimes against National Socialists after World War II as a model.
Crimes shortly after the start of the war
The first reports of war crimes came shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February. Women had been raped and the bodies of civilians found in the streets of Bucha. There were attacks on theaters, schools and hospitals, among other things. The International Criminal Court in The Hague has been investigating since early March and has sent the largest team to date into the war zone. In July, western countries pledged to cooperate more closely on the investigation.
Moscow reports control of Pisky
Meanwhile, Russian troops reported that they had retaken the village of Pisky on the outskirts of the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk. Russian and pro-Russian forces announced just over a week ago that they had taken full control of the village. They allegedly destroyed a US-supplied HIMARS missile system and an ammunition depot for that weapons system near the city of Kramatorsk.
The center of the Ukrainian coal and steel industry is located in the affected region of Donetsk (Donbass). The city of Donetsk itself has been controlled by pro-Russian separatists since 2014.
