Residents and dozens of tourists were awakened on the island when the quake struck at 6:25 am. The earthquake was also felt on the islands of Chios and Ikaria and along the Turkish Aegean coast.
The center of the quake was about twelve kilometers below the seafloor in the strait between Samos and the Turkish Aegean coast near Kusadasi, as reported by the Geodynamic Institute in Athens.
