China has again conducted military maneuvers near the island in response to the US delegation’s visit on Sunday. This serves as a “strong deterrent against the United States and Taiwan and their political ploys that undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,” the Chinese military said.
The government in Beijing is threatening all countries that maintain or establish contacts with Taiwan with consequences.
Shortly after the controversial visit to Taiwan by US House of Representatives President Nancy Pelosi, another delegation of five US congressmen traveled to the island republic. It is led by Democratic Senator Ed Markey and was received there Monday by President Tsai Ing-wen.
The visit is part of a trip to the Indo-Pacific region, according to a statement from the US Mission in Taipei, which performs the duties of an embassy. Meetings with Taiwanese politicians will include relationships and global supply chains.
The US stressed that visits by US congressmen to Taiwan are not uncommon and are in line with US One China policy.
By contrast, the Ministry of Defense in Beijing said the visit violated China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The US showed “their true face”. The Chinese military will continue to “prepare for war and act decisively against any form of separatist ‘Taiwan independence’ and foreign interference.”
China already saw Pelosi’s visit as a provocation and violation of its sovereignty and, after his departure, began maneuvers on an unprecedented scale in the immediate vicinity of the island.
