The airport on the small Greek island of Skiathos is very popular with so-called planespotters – enthusiasts who observe and photograph aircraft. Because the runway there is very short and bounded by the sea at both ends, jets have to approach very low. Sometimes so low that they just barely roar over people’s heads, as the video (above) shows.
Such as the machine of the Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air, which flew dangerously close over the heads of the spectators on August 5 during the landing approach. Because the runway at Skiathos Alexandros Papadiamantis Airport is only 1,628 meters long, pilots have to approach just above the sea and significantly lower than at other airports.
Planespotting on Skiathos is not without its dangers, which is why there are numerous warning signs on site pointing out the dangers. In June, a British tourist on the Greek island was blown away by the thrust of the turbines of a landing passenger plane and was seriously injured. “Some people don’t understand how great the danger is,” the mayor of Skiathos warned on Greek television.
