Vodafone will adjust rates from January to increase inflation

Date:

The company will annually adjust its customers’ contracts to automatically link them to the evolution of the IPC and to achieve “business sustainability”.

The rise in inflation is disrupting all sectors. The latest is that of the ‘telecos’, heavily conditioned by the price war between companies, after Vodafone announced this Wednesday that it will automatically link its rates to the CPI data each year. As announced by Expansión and confirmed by this newspaper, the company will adjust its rates based on the year-over-year CPI calculated between October of the previous year and September of the current year.

This change to the contracts of its thousands of customers will be announced this week and will come into effect in January. Those who are not happy with the change have 30 days to unsubscribe from the company without penalty, as it is an amendment to the contract already signed, Vodafone sources explain. Except in the case of customers who have installment financing for a mobile terminal, who would have to pay those installments first if they want to leave the company.

Vulnerable customers who have taken out the company’s social tariffs, as well as customers of the operator’s second brand, the ‘low cost’ Lowi, are excluded from this contract change.

Vodafone assures that this change is due to “the rise in prices and the continuous rise in the price of energy, costs, services and suppliers.” Its aim is to “consolidate the long-term sustainability of the company” and provide the “necessary resources” for networks, products and services in Spain. From the company, they explain that mobile phone prices have fallen by 32% since 2008, despite the sharp increase in customers and data usage.

“More than 34% of revenue has been lost in the last ten years and the value of the company has fallen by about 50%,” Vodafone said. This has reduced operators’ investment capacity in infrastructure for the new 5G telecommunications networks, they say.
