Germany and Switzerland are considering heating limits for companies and apartments. Austria not (yet).
“We’re not idiots!” The CDU fired harsh words at German Economy Minister Robert Habeck (Greens). The reason is a plan to save energy, which has been in effect since Thursday. As the gas crisis forces drastic cuts, Germany’s 186,000 public buildings and their offices will follow suit.
The motto is a maximum of 19 degrees, corridors and foyers are no longer heated at all. Permanently open doors: prohibited. Lighting on buildings: prohibited. Even private swimming pools are no longer allowed to be heated.
Switzerland goes even further
In Switzerland they go one step further. Even households can be ordered to heat up to a maximum of 19 degrees in an emergency. The decision is controversial, the Confederates foam. In the worst case, hard quotas threaten, but only for companies. The police must monitor compliance with the border. According to the Federal Council, “delicate situations” can arise.
“Temperature Sinners” Shouldn’t Be Controlled
But what is the situation in Austria? Here too, the Ministry of Climate Protection knows that saving energy is not only good for the climate, but also for your wallet. “The ministry’s campaign starts in the autumn, at the beginning of the heating season. Because every savings counts and makes an important contribution to freeing us from Putin’s grip,” confirms press spokesman Samson Landrieser-Leon.
According to Leonore Gewessler’s Green Department, in particular, potential savings in public buildings are being explored at the federal level and implemented as soon as possible. That was decided at the Summer Council of Ministers. A number of measures have been implemented under our own management, namely at the Ministry of Climate Protection, and the annual heat consumption has been reduced by 11 percent and electricity consumption by 15 percent.
Gewessler emphasizes that there are savings initiatives in communities. One thing is currently definitely out of the question: checks by strict officials who are supposed to find “temperature sinners”.
