From hummus to oatmeal: new food forms are encouraging Austria’s largest dairy to produce purely plant-based products. Because it doesn’t always have to be milk.
Milk, butter, yoghurt, quark, whey drink, whipped cream, sour cream and cheese in a wide variety of versions – it is only when you stand in front of the refrigerated display cases in one of Berglandmilch’s dairy markets that you realize just how large the range is at the largest dairy from Austria.
However, for the company of Josef Braunshofer and Herbert Altendorfer, milk is no longer everything – a tightrope walk. Berglandmilch has also been making an oatmeal drink for three years and this year hummus is being added. “100 percent with chickpeas from Austria”, emphasizes Braunshofer, who also responds to the changed food forms: “There are more and more flexitarians and people who eat vegan.” The ingredients for the purely plant-based products are purchased as much as possible from their own dairy farmers.
General Assembly in Gmunden comes up on Tuesday
Dairy companies face a challenge economically, which is also apparent from the ambitions of dairy Gmundner in recent months: After the Traunseestadt-based company first wanted to marry SalzburgMilch and gave the cartel agency the green light for the merger, Gmundners finally changed of thoughts.
A close relationship has now been established with the German dairy company Jäger. The necessary general meeting will be held on 6 September.
