Deal rejected – short-time work as a bone of contention in the battle for skilled labour

Date:

Wage dumping and shortage of workers: AKNÖ President Markus Wieser notes anti-employee and anti-corporate practices on the part of the AMS. Because although short-time work has already been agreed between all those responsible, applications are rejected at the headquarters of AMS Lower Austria.

Short-time work has been on everyone’s lips since the corona pandemic. But it has always been a proven means of bridging short-term bottlenecks in companies and retaining qualified employees in the long term. This is the only way to guarantee full order capacities in the future, emphasizes Markus Wieser, chairman of the Workers’ Chamber. But now dark clouds are forming in the labor market sky.

Because the labor market service (AMS) is now creating obstacles to the consensus that was decided at the level of the social partners. Surprisingly, the AMS wants to withdraw this skilled workforce from the company by no longer approving short-time work. The skilled workers involved should instead apply to other companies or be referred by the AMS.

Companies are being drained
A decision that caused waves: “This practice is counterproductive and a threat to the site and must therefore be stopped immediately,” urged Wieser to act immediately. “It is bleeding the companies dry,” says the AK president, putting companies at risk of losing an important part of their workforce. At the same time, this would open the door to wage dumping. Wieser therefore demands that the practice, which is hostile to employees and the company, be stopped immediately. In the interest of the company and its employees.
