For reasons that have not yet been clarified, there was a malfunction in the cash registers in the branches of the supermarket chain Billa throughout Austria on Wednesday morning. Purchases in the affected markets could only be paid in cash.
A group spokesperson for the supermarket chain confirmed to ‘Heute’ that there have been technical problems with card payments since the early morning hours. They are working on a quick solution to the problem, but it is still completely unclear when the defect can be solved. Until then, customers in the affected locations would be asked to pay for their purchases in cash.
A similar incident only occurred in Germany at the end of May. A problem with the payment equipment of the American provider Verifone meant that thousands of customers in many supermarkets, including Aldi Nord, Edeka and its subsidiary Netto, were no longer able to pay with a debit or credit card.
