More than 13 million euros in debt! The prefabricated housing supplier Scalahaus, based in the Salzburg town of Eugendorf, slipped out of business. Nearly 60 families from all over Austria are now worried and trembling in front of their homes. What’s next? A harassed housewife reports.
“Actually, everything should be ready by August.” Sabine R. is completely off the map. The hull of their prefab house in Steyr has been in place since the beginning of March. When she can actually move in with her family is written in the stars. The Upper Austrians bought their house from the company Scalahaus. The Eugendorf company has gone bankrupt. Contrary to what was planned last week – the “Krone” reported – the operation will not go ahead.
Scalahaus promises: ‘More houses will be added’
In addition to the R. family, nearly 60 other affected people are waiting for their homes to be completed. Scalahaus tries to calm down: “We have found a solution with partner companies,” says company spokesman Thomas Blümke. They will therefore contact the home builders and complete the projects. “In a week or two all families will know what the future holds,” Blümke assures. And: “The bankruptcy is a painful step for Scalahaus. But our customers now have their homes much faster than they would have been with a renovation.” Most of the 88 employees of the Eugendorf-based company will be transferred to partner companies.
Huge additional costs are now waiting for home builders
According to the creditor protection associations, the debts of Scalahaus amount to 13.1 million euros. In 2021 the loss balance amounted to 8.8 million euros. The main cause of bankruptcy? It is said that the huge price increases in the industry could not be passed on to customers because of fixed price agreements. No such commitments will be made in the future. “We bought our house based on the 2020 price. We are now faced with huge additional costs,” says R. The housing loan will start to run in September. “It is going to be tight for our young family.”
