Chocolate, soda with lemon tea and sweetcorn, but no trace of eggs, milk, bread or any other fresh produce, be it meat, fish or fruit. Carrefour picked up the gauntlet launched last week by its second vice president, Yolanda Díaz, and from Monday, consumers will be able to buy a shopping basket in its stores with 30 basic products with “the lowest price on the market” and that will not change their costs. at least until January 8.
30 basic products for 30 euros to “protect the purchasing power of your customers”. This is how the major French distribution chain is promoting it, which also makes it clear that it is not necessary to buy the whole basket to take advantage of these prices, but that each item can be purchased individually.
The first thing that is surprising about the selection that Carrefour makes is that among these 30 basic products, all of their own private label, there are none that are so essential in Spanish homes such as milk, bread, eggs… do not take fresh products mee: no fish, no fruit, no meat, despite Diaz’s call to join. It’s the closest thing to a can of precooked meatballs, a jar of apricot jam, or sandwich bread or hamburger buns. Of course without an option for celiac patients and with only one gluten-free item: chicken broth.
For example, the vast majority of foods are dry, such as pasta spirals, or canned, such as peas, mushrooms, tuna in sunflower oil, or piquillo peppers. Flour, salt, sunflower oil or white vinegar are some of the basic necessities for cooking.
Personal hygiene products such as toilet paper, toothpaste, shower gel or compresses are added to the basket, as are household cleaning products such as hand dishes, bleach, liquid detergent or window cleaner.
The lowest price is 0.25 euros for salt and the most expensive is sunflower oil, at 2.54 euros.
