European start-ups received more than 88 billion euros in venture capital last year. According to the advisor EY, the volume of 2020 had more than doubled. In terms of the number of funding rounds, Great Britain came in first place, Austria in eleventh place. Thanks to two local unicorns, there was even a new funding record.
In Austria, Bitpanda and GoStudent achieved the largest financings in 2021. The two young companies received more than half of the total investment capital in Austria, which increased significantly from 2020 to 2021: from 212 million euros to 1.24 billion euros. This corresponds to a fivefold increase. Austria improved from 16th to 11th place.
Most venture capital flowed to Britain
However, British start-ups received the most venture capital in Europe at 31.4 billion euros, according to the analysis published Friday. Germany followed with a record value of 17.4 billion euros (229 percent) and strong growth in the number of financing rounds, ahead of France (11.6 billion euros).
The largest funding went to British veterinary group IVC Evidensia. She received 3.5 billion euros. It was followed by the Swedish battery start-up Northvolt (2.28 billion) and the British Constellation Automotive Group (1.15 billion). The Berlin delivery service Gorillas came fourth and fifth with a cash injection of 861 million euros and the Munich software developer Celonis (830 million). The smartphone bank N26, founded by Austrians in Germany, and the online broker Trade Republic as well as the operator of electric charging stations Ionity (Munich) were also in the top ten.
