The hype for online purchases is over. In the first half of the second quarter, sales fell at 1,600 dealers in Upper Austria. Now they are looking for new distribution channels. Trend researcher Nick Sohnemann calls for creativity.
Whether it concerns fashion, furniture or sports shoes: thanks to the corona crisis, online trade was booming. “Now people want to do business in person again – sales are falling,” Nick Sohnemann, a trend researcher from Hamburg, says about “Krone”.
At an event organized by the Upper Austrian trade in the Rosengarten, he spoke about the current problems with online shopping: “Consumers have a lot of work, they often have to make cumbersome selections and orders. Also the logistics are often too complicated.” Online trading therefore requires a lot of improvement.
Pandemic brought breakthrough
You can no longer do without the internet. More than 1600 companies are active in the mail order sector in Upper Austria alone. Compared to the previous year, half-year turnover decreased by minus 1.6 percent. Declines were in textiles, luxury goods and club sports items, among other things. However, turnover is still well above pre-crisis levels.
Now TikTok?
The topics of the future include “new sales channels such as TikTok, the ecological transformation or reusable packaging,” said Gremial chairman Martin Sonntag. Trend researcher Sohnemann also argues for more creativity in the online sector: “A product photo is no longer enough. Videos make shopping on the Internet more interesting, or rental and test offers combined with online trading.”
