Marlene Engelhorn (30) is not only rich, she is “incredibly rich”, as she says herself. And she likes to pay taxes. Now the Viennese gave a lecture in Innsbruck – the “Tiroler Krone” took the opportunity to talk to the millionaire about her motives and her desire to finally pay taxes.
“crown”: Ms. Engelhorn, one often hears the phrase, “You don’t talk about money.” You talk a lot about money. Why do you do that?
Marlene Engelhorn: The phrase “You don’t talk about money, you have money” occurs in private conversations and public discussions. But why exactly? If you question that, it quickly becomes clear that very often it is not something that needs to be discussed in order not to question the power dynamics at work here. There is an urgent need for a large-scale and transparent public discourse about how wealth is distributed and who therefore also holds structural positions of power. These include who can buy a newspaper or television station, who makes the big party donations, and whose investments determine what is considered economically important.
