In Austria, consumer prices continue to rise sharply. According to a quick estimate by Statistics Austria, inflation would have risen to 10.5 percent in September, entering double digits. Such high consumer price inflation was last measured in July 1952, the statisticians said in a broadcast Friday. Inflation was mainly fueled by high prices for household energy and fuel.
There were also slight increases in prices for groceries and restaurant visits, which further reduced the purchasing power of Austrians. Compared to the previous month, the price level is expected to rise by 1.6 percent. In August, prices were still 9.3 percent higher than a year ago.
The Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) also skyrocketed, likely up 11 percent year-on-year, according to preliminary estimates. Compared to the previous month, the price level has risen by 2.5 percent according to the HICP. The final figures will be announced on October 19.
