Given the skyrocketing prices, the city of Vienna is expanding its energy support for private households. Applications for “Energy Support Plus” can be submitted from 3 October. This means that the municipality will pay a maximum of 500 euros in arrears for energy costs via direct instructions to the energy company concerned. About 200,000 Viennese households are eligible, which means a significant expansion of the target group.
The money that the city of Vienna previously used for energy support will be increased from six to 26 million euros, the city hall announced on Sunday. “In the current situation, energy cost backlogs are difficult for many Vienna to resolve. We help those who need the support most urgently – and we do that in a targeted manner by paying the outstanding bills to the energy suppliers,” said Alderman for Social Affairs Peter Hacker (SPÖ).
No closures from December to February
“I think it’s important that no one has to sit in a cold, dark apartment. In addition to Wien Energie’s voluntary commitment not to cut off electricity, gas and heat in the coming winter, i.e. from December 2022 to the end of February 2023, we also support by paying overdue energy costs. In addition, in December, about 650,000 Viennese households will benefit from the Vienna Energy Bonus 22 and will receive 200 euros in cash on their account,” said Peter Hanke (SPÖ), alderman for Economic Affairs.
The following persons can apply for Energy Support Plus online: Recipients of Vienna minimum security, housing assistance, AIVG benefits, a compensatory or supplementary allowance, GIS-exempt persons and people with low incomes who fall under the cost ceiling of the Renewable Development Act or who are entitled to sick pay, rehabilitation allowance, reintegration allowance or transition allowance.
