Education attracts employment with 29,286 extra members, but unemployment is rising

Date:

September creates new jobs, all women, while unemployment rises by 17,600 people

One of lime and one of sand on the September labor market. After two consecutive months of job destruction and despite the current economic uncertainty, Spain again added new branches in September: an average of nearly 30,000 more, less than the 40,000 predicted by Social Security Minister José Luis Escrivá. two weeks ago, but the third-largest increase in history, behind only the strong job creation recorded in the September post-pandemic.

For example, the market is showing unusually strong again in times of crisis, but nevertheless job creation continues to slow down year-on-year for the fifth consecutive month: it rose from 5% in April to 3.3% in September, still a good figure , but almost two points lower in less than half a year.

Another shadow comes from unemployment, which increased by more than 17,600 people, compared to the decline in unemployment in the previous three years. It is true, however, that in September, a month marked by strong seasonality after the summer campaign, it is common for the old INEM lists to increase and in fact it is a more moderate increase for this month than the average, which amounted to 46,307 people between 2008 and 2019.

At the same time, open-ended contracts are regaining momentum and 46.72% of newly signed contracts are stable in nature.

With the new membership increase in September, Social Security stands at 20,180,287 contributors, which is 649,176 more than a year ago, while the number of unemployed rose to 2,941,919, 315,883 fewer people than in 2021.

Education has acted as a driver of employment this month, generating 61,612 new jobs as a result of the return to school, demonstrating once again that this sector still suffers from high temporary employment: it destroys jobs in the summer to take up again in the fall. This confirms that the labor reform, which has significantly reduced temporary employment, has no impact on the public sector. Administrative activities have also played a major role in this contributor recovery, adding an additional 20,044.

On the contrary, the end of the tourist season is ending with 36,000 fewer workers in Spanish shops and 33,000 fewer in the hotel industry. The health sector is also losing 11,500 professionals after the reinforcement to cover the summer holidays.

This increase in contributions, so focused on education and administration, has resulted in all employment being generated by women, to the point that membership among women has grown by 61,351 while among men it has fallen by 32,065.
