Semiconductor Summit – This is how the domestic chip industry should get going

Date:

As part of a “Chip Summit”, Economics Minister Martin Kocher, the funding agencies FFG and aws, interest groups and companies presented programs to promote the development and production of semiconductors in Austria. “Any investment in this sector creates high-skilled jobs in the long run and generates wealth,” says Kocher.

According to a broadcast, European semiconductor manufacturers are increasingly turning to Europe as a manufacturing location to reduce their dependence on Asia. About two-thirds of the global chip and processor contract manufacturing capacity is currently anchored in Taiwan. At the EU level, the European Commission aims to use the European “Chips Act” to double the European Union’s market share in global chip production to 20 percent by 2030.

The Austrian federal government has therefore taken appropriate initiatives. Since March 2021, an Austrian consortium of companies has been involved in a pan-European project (IPCEI Mikroelektronik) with a total national financing volume of approximately 150 million euros. Preparations are also underway for Austrian participation in a second project of common European interest in the field of microelectronics.

The “Lab2Fab” programme, which is co-financed with funds from the Zukunft Österreich Fund, is being relaunched. 12 million euros is available for this. The aim of the new funding program is to support the Austrian semiconductor industry and related sectors in carrying out multi-year research and development projects up to and including the establishment of the industrial production of semiconductor products.
