The American chip manufacturer Intel plans significant staff reductions due to the downturn in the computer market. According to insiders, the number of cancellations runs into the thousands.
The Bloomberg agency reported this on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the case. The layoffs are expected to be announced later this month. Some departments, such as sales or marketing, could face cuts of up to 20 percent in headcount, the report said. According to Bloomberg, the company had 113,700 employees in July.
Intel initially declined to comment on the job cuts. The company lowered its full-year revenue and profit expectations in July after missing estimates for the second quarter.
PC sales at strongest minus since the 90s
According to the latest figures from the consulting firm Gartner on Tuesday, PC sales in the third quarter have collapsed more than in nearly 30 years. From July to September, 68 million units were delivered worldwide, a decrease of almost 20 percent compared to the same period last year.
