The American food producer Mars has meanwhile stopped deliveries to the German supermarket chains Rewe and Edeka and their discounters Penny and Netto due to a price conflict. Despite intense negotiations, Rewe said in Cologne on Wednesday that there was no basis for accepting the price increases requested by Mars.
Some demands that cannot be justified by higher energy and raw material costs are “strictly rejected”. Edeka sees it that way too. “In our opinion, the current hefty price demands from manufacturer Mars are in fact not justified,” said a spokesperson.
Rewe Austria is no longer delivered
Only last week it was announced that Rewe Austria (Billa, Penny) is no longer supplied by Mars. This applies not only to bars such as Snickers or Mars, but also to dog and cat foods such as Pedigree and Whiskas, as well as Wrigley’s gum or Ben’s rice. The background is that Mars demanded higher prices, it said.
Mars offers chocolate (Snickers, Bounty), chewing gum (Airwaves), pet food (Chappi), pasta (Miracoli), rice dishes (Ben’s Original) and ice cream. Rewe and Edeka point customers to alternatives they can offer with their own brands and other branded products.
Mars, whose German headquarters are in Verden in the state of Lower Saxony, initially did not comment.
