Specifically, 22% of GDP in 2021 came from the direct or indirect impact of this sector, they assure Ametic. “The digital technology sector has been a fundamental support for business and social life during the pandemic, which has had effects and repercussions lasting into 2021, to the point where the sector has reached its highest historic number of companies,” he assured. he. Pedro Mier, president of Ametic, during the presentation of the new edition of the digital economy barometer 2022.

Investments in information and communication technologies (ICT) by public administrations in 2021 amounted to 5,296 million euros, a growth of 96% compared to the previous year due to the impact of European funds.

The industry x-ray shows that 2021 has been a year marked by the cloud and data, with information technology taking center stage with nearly half of the technology sector’s revenue (48%) in 2021, followed through communication (25%).

Likewise, the sector already directly employs approximately 582,000 people. If the accumulated growth of the past five years is analyzed, it can be seen that the increase in jobs is almost a third of the total number of employees (+31.7%), which amounts to 140,257 more people. An increase that extends to all areas analysed, although information technology leads the way with a double digit percentage (+11.2%).

“We have a sector that is dominated by automation, technology and knowledge. A sector that offers quality work and continuous training, as well as allowing the development of long-term professional careers,” explains Antonio Cimorra, Director of Digital Agenda and Sector Studies at Ametic.
