Labor market situation – 308,273 people are currently looking for a job

Date:

More positive news from the job market: 308,273 people are currently looking for a job, of which 69,761 are in training. “The development corresponds to the usual development at the end of the summer season,” Labor Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP) said on Tuesday. Unemployment – including people in training – is still below the values of the past three years and pre-registrations for short-time work are still at a relatively low level at 6,382 people.

“These data show that short-time work is currently much less necessary than in the Corona years 2020 and 2021, despite the challenges for companies associated with high energy prices,” emphasized Kocher. Short-time working is “increasingly approaching its original purpose as a crisis instrument in exceptional situations”.

The development of GDP, reflected by the GDP indicator of the OECD, shows a 0.5 percent higher GDP in the week from 2 to 9 October 2022 than in the corresponding week compared to the previous year. “The geopolitical situation is still an obstacle to economic growth, but at the beginning of October we see that the economy is growing again,” said the minister. The message is also likely to be heard by the social partners who are currently negotiating wages and salaries for metallurgists and trade for 2023.
