After Covid turbulence – Graz Airport will not fly out of the loss zone until 2023

Date:

After the turbulence caused by the corona pandemic, Graz Airport is slowly maneuvering itself back into the black: in 2022, however, the result should still be negative. The minus will be less than a million euros.

According to Airport Managing Director Wolfgang Grimus, the year so far has been better than feared: “Demand has increased faster than expected”. This has mainly caused bottlenecks at airlines and other airports, such as the many canceled flights and the chaos at the airports. Not so in Graz: Unlike the others, the staff hasn’t been cut that much. 95 percent of the permanent team was retained – thanks to short-time working.

Another loss this year
But despite the state aid, the result for 2020 was minus 4.3 million euros, in 2021 the loss was less than four million euros and this year there will be another loss, “but less than one million euros”, according to Jürgen’s forecast Loeschnig, the second director.

Against the wind in 2023
Next year they want to be in the black again. In the first quarter of 2022, demand was still weak at minus 70 percent, but bookings have been increasing since April. With minus 35 percent you are “only” more than in pre-Corona times. The numbers increased, especially among tourists.
