The world is increasingly failing to vaccinate children. Although the immunisations can be pushed back between 1980 and 2023, many life -threatening infectious diseases, there is again a fatal danger of millions of adolescents, international experts now warns in the “Lancet” Medical Specialist Journal. In Austria, the rate of the children with a first dose of the measles-mump-red vaccine would have fallen by eight percent.
The scientists investigated the development of the routine vaccinations of children in 204 countries and regions of the world. Great success is against an ever -critical situation in this area:
- Worldwide, the vaccination percentage for adolescents has doubled against diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough (pertussis), measles, polio and tuberculosis between 1980 and 2023.
- Moreover, there was a decrease in the number of children who had never received a routine vaccine for children, from 58.8 million in 1980 to 14.7 million in 2019 before Covid 19 Pandemie. That was a reduction of 75 percent.
- However, progress has been stuck in many countries since 2010 or has become the opposite: the measles vaccinations fell in one hundred of the 204 countries and regions between 2020 and 2019.
- In 21 of the 36 states with high incomes, a reduction in coverage for at least one vaccination dose against diphtheria, tetanus, violating cough, measles, polio or tuberculosis was registered.
- The COVID 19 -Pandemie has also tightened the situation. In 2023 there were an estimated 15.7 million “zero dose of children” who had not received first vaccination with diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough vaccines in the first year of life, with more than half in just eight countries, mainly in Africa south of the Sahara (53 percent) and in South Asia (13 percent).
Less measles protection in Austria
Long -term progress has made up for the recent challenges and considerable inequalities, wrote traditional and highly respected trade magazine in medicine: “Between 2010 and 2019, growth in vaccination protection delayed and in some parts of the world returned to the cover of at least one of the Epi vaccination program of the Who; Routine vaccination plans in some countries)-including a decrease in the first dose of measles vaccination in Argentina by twelve percent and eight percent in Austria.
Only the measles-mump-red-vaccine is used here. To remedy measles in Austria or a region in the world, the two -time vaccination of at least 95 percent of the children would be necessary. Austria has failed here for many years.
Austria rather in West -Europe
In the detailed list of twelve Western European countries, Austria is in last place (together with Ireland) in terms of a vaccination percentage of only 91 percent, when it comes to the vaccinations of the first children (“zero-dose of children”). More than 7,500 babies did not get the first dose of immunisations. Switzerland (96.8 percent), Spain (96.7 percent) and Finland (96.4 percent) performed the best. Germany came to 96 percent, for example up to 93.5 percent. In Russia a first vaccination percentage of 95.5 percent was reached, in Italy and in Hungary it was each 99.8 percent.
Moreover, the proportion of children that received the measles vaccine went back to one hundred 204 countries, with the largest decline in Latin America and the Caribbean. There, the coverage of approximately 90 percent in 2010 fell to 87 percent in 2019. This led to almost a million fewer children being vaccinated against measles in 2019.
