Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has fired the head of his bodyguard after a foiled assassination attempt. Zelensky published a decree on Thursday “dismissing Serhiy Leonidovich Rud from the post of head of the Ministry of State Security of Ukraine.” The decision did not provide any reason for the change in personnel at the highly sensitive post.
Ukraine’s domestic secret service SBU said on Tuesday it had dismantled a “network of agents” controlled by Russia’s FSB secret service who were “preparing the assassination of the Ukrainian president.”
“Take and kill all hostages”
The group’s plans focused on recruiting soldiers from Zelensky’s security service entourage to “take him hostage and kill him.” Two officers of Zelensky’s bodyguard were arrested on charges of passing classified information to Russia.
Rud, 47, has headed the department responsible for the personal security of the Ukrainian president and other high-ranking government members and their families since 2019.
Russia has had Zelenskyj in its sights since the offensive in Ukraine began. According to Kiev, several assassination attempts have already been made against the president and other Ukrainian government officials.
