Even before signing an agreement with Lebanon on a common maritime border, Israel started producing gas from the Karisch field in the Mediterranean. The British-Greek company Energean announced this on Wednesday. The agreement with Lebanon will be officially signed on Thursday.
After decades of arguing, both sides had agreed on a common sea border about two weeks ago. The background of the dispute was a disputed sea area off the coast. The conflict had intensified after the discovery of large amounts of natural gas resources. The negotiations were brokered by the United States.
At the same time, both countries stressed that the talks would not normalize their relations. They are officially at war.
Gas can help Europe
The gas from Israel could also help alleviate the energy crisis in Europe. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the EU has been increasingly looking for other gas suppliers. In September, Israeli Prime Minister Jair Lapid announced that from 2023, natural gas could also be supplied to European countries via Egypt.
