The vacation rental platform Airbnb is largely ceasing its activities in China. The company will no longer offer accommodation or “experiences” to visitors to China, sources told AFP.
However, users from China should still be able to book accommodation abroad. The company declined to comment officially.
Strict corona rules make doing business difficult
Airbnb started its business in China six years ago. Since then, the company has had some 25 million customers there. According to the company, bookings in China accounted for just one percent of all bookings worldwide in recent years. The platform faces strong competition in China. The Chinese government’s strict isolation measures during the corona pandemic have also made doing business more difficult in recent years.
Airbnb expects its booming pre-pandemic travel business with Chinese customers abroad to pick up once the authorities reopen its borders.
