The sector denounces that between 200 and 250 small businesses disappear every month due to the rise in costs, despite the agreement after the mobilization last March
Carriers are going on strike again. The Platform for the Defense of Transport has called for another indefinite strike from Sunday evening to Monday, which threatens to reproduce the chaos experienced in March, when pressure from the sector even caused production to stop in large numbers. companies, the dairy and beer sector, among others.
The leader of the association, Manuel Hernández, announced the decision of the employees on Monday. A move that, in his view, is inevitable, given the rise in costs that the sector has to endure. Speaking to the media, Hernández denounced that “month after month between 200 and 250 companies in the sector are disappearing” due to the impact of higher costs in an inflationary environment.
The new shutdowns come after measures approved by the government in consensus with the majority carriers’ organizations, which are part of the National Road Transport Committee (CNTC).
These measures include the new law to prevent carriers from operating at a loss or a new package of 450 million direct aid, in addition to the measures already approved in 2021 and in April 2022, such as the 20 cent discount, the ban on that drivers do the loading and unloading; the limitation to one hour of waiting time in the loading and unloading areas, the reinforcement of transport control or assistance with leaving the profession.
However, Hernández argues that the shippers (customers of the carriers) continue to break the law that prohibits working at a loss in the sector, and points out the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda to renounce the Guardia Civil to control the control and condemn this infringement.
Shortly before the strike call was made public, the Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Raquel Sánchez, acknowledged her “concern” about another possible strike in the transport sector and appealed to the group’s “responsibility” so that they do not call stop again.
“We are following and waiting for the results of the votes,” said the minister, who assured that the government “has fulfilled all agreements with the transport sector.” For this reason, and after offering a dialogue to “redirect” the “minor imbalances” that may exist, he has called on carriers not to strike again, especially in the current “complex moment”.
The Minister recalled that the transport decree agreed with the sector ensured that it could not operate at a loss and insisted that, if situations arise where this is not met, there is a complaints procedure.
