iPhone factory in China – lockdown ends, but workers are stuck

Date:

Despite the easing of the coronavirus in Zhengzhou (China), Apple supplier Foxconn is sticking to the measures at its factory there. The closed operation at the iPhone factory must be maintained, Foxconn said.

Zhengzhou’s economic zone said on Wednesday that the seven-day lockdown in the area had been lifted. However, certain restrictions in medium to high risk areas – such as places where cases have been recently discovered – remain in place.

Thousands of workers fled
Foxconn, which is responsible for 70 percent of global iPhone production, is facing widespread employee dissatisfaction over the restrictions. Numerous workers fled the factory.

Foxconn’s main customer, Apple, expects fewer deliveries of the iPhone 14 due to the production shutdown and has recently moved production to India to become more independent from China with its strict zero-covid policy.
